President Donald Trump unveiled plans for the Golden Dome missile defense system, designed to deploy American anti-missile weapons in space to counter threats primarily from China and Russia.

Trump estimated the system will cost around $175 billion and be completed within three years, with $25 billion requested initially to begin construction.

The system aims to detect and intercept missiles at multiple stages of flight, integrating space-based and ground-based capabilities, and would be led by Space Force’s Gen. Michael Guetlein.

China and Russia have criticized the system as destabilizing, while the Congressional Budget Office estimates operating costs could range from $161 billion to $542 billion over two decades depending on the number of interceptors.
