The trespassing charge against Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, stemming from an incident at a federal immigration detention center, will be dismissed, according to US attorney Alina Habba.

However, Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, present during the incident, will face assault charges related to a scuffle with ICE agents.

Baraka and other Democrats argue the charges are politically motivated, while the lawmakers maintain their visit was an unannounced inspection aimed at detainee oversight.

The detention center, run by GEO Group, has faced criticism over permits and community opposition.
