Tesla loses more ground in Europe, while BYD makes gains
Tesla’s vehicle sales in the European Union, European Free Trade Association, and U.K. have dropped by 49% year-over-year in April, despite the launch of its new Model Y.
This decline contrasts with competitors who have maintained sales levels, with Chinese manufacturer BYD notably increasing EV registrations by 59% in the region.
The downturn in Tesla sales has been linked to CEO Elon Musk’s controversial political involvement, which has negatively affected the brand’s perception in Europe.
Despite this, electric vehicle sales overall in Europe continue to grow, with a 27.8% increase in EV registrations and hybrids seeing a 31% rise in sales in April 2025.
