Starlink Suspends Roaming Services in South Africa Amid Regulatory and Licensing Issues
Starlink has started suspending its Roam Unlimited and Global Roaming service users in South Africa, citing unauthorized territory usage and regulatory approval requirements.
Despite lack of official licensing, South Africans have used Starlink equipment by relocating kits from authorized countries, a practice under scrutiny by South Africa’s communications regulator, Icasa.
Current talks between Starlink and the South African government focus on regulatory changes, specifically around equity ownership requirements, to allow official operations in the country.
Starlink plans to launch officially in South Africa once regulatory issues are resolved and has similarly blocked roaming services in neighboring Namibia, with launch expected later this year.
