SERAP Urges Tinubu to Reconsider Appointment of Alleged APC Members as INEC RECs Ahead of 2027 Elections
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the appointment of at least three alleged APC members as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of INEC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
SERAP called for the nomination of qualified, non-partisan Nigerians of unquestionable integrity to replace the alleged APC members and for the Attorney General to draft a bill enhancing INEC’s independence.
The organization emphasized that partisan appointments could undermine public confidence and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process, stressing the constitutional mandate for INEC’s impartiality.
SERAP stressed the importance of an independent electoral commission for credible elections, referencing constitutional provisions and international standards supporting impartial electoral bodies.
