Reps grant 10-year protection for journalist who exposed fake degrees in Benin Republic
The Nigerian House of Representatives has granted investigative journalist Umar Audu a 10-year security protection following his exposé on a certificate racketeering syndicate selling fake university degrees from the Benin Republic to Nigerians.
The investigation revealed that many fake degrees were fraudulently cleared by government agencies, prompting a parliamentary probe involving multiple House committees.
Officials, including the Minister of the Interior and the Ministry of Education, have acknowledged the issue and committed to reforms, such as automated verification systems, to prevent future fraud.
The NYSC has also implemented biometric verification for certificate validation, as the House committee continues its investigation and works to protect Nigeria’s educational and public service integrity.
