Peter Obi Blames Haphazard Implementation, Not Removal, for Nigeria’s Fuel Subsidy Crisis
Peter Obi, Labour party presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general election, stated there is nothing inherently wrong with removing the fuel subsidy, but criticized the Tinubu administration for its haphazard implementation.
Obi referenced his manifesto, which included plans to remove the subsidy in an organized manner, and highlighted that the previous subsidy system was marked by criminality.
He emphasized the need for transparency on how the billions saved from subsidy removal have been invested in critical development areas, questioning the current administration’s use of funds.
The statement follows President Tinubu’s May 29, 2023 inauguration speech announcing an end to the fuel subsidy, which subsequently led to increased petrol prices and rising costs of transportation and food.
