OpenAI Acquires Jony Ive’s Startup in $6.5 Billion Deal To Create AI Devices

OpenAI has announced its acquisition of io, a startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion. This marks OpenAI’s largest purchase and aims to develop new AI-related hardware products.

Jony Ive and his team of about 55 engineers and designers will join OpenAI to lead creative and design efforts, focusing on devices that improve user interaction with artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Both Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described their goal as creating revolutionary products that enhance humanity, with specific product details expected to be shared next year.

The partnership brings together prominent Silicon Valley figures targeting the emerging future technology of human-level AI intelligence.
