One third of HIV patients in Akwa Ibom unaware they have hypertension – Study
A recent study published in the European Heart Journal reveals that nearly one in three people living with HIV (PLWHIV) in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, are unaware they have high blood pressure.
The research, led by the MAP-IT study team, highlights the urgent need to integrate cardiovascular screening into HIV care, especially given Akwa Ibom’s high HIV burden ranking third in Nigeria.
The study involved nurse-led community screenings during the 2023 World AIDS Day, uncovering a significant number of undiagnosed hypertension cases among those tested.
The findings emphasize expanding World AIDS Day campaigns to include routine screening and management of non-communicable diseases like hypertension to improve health outcomes for PLWHIV.
