Ifedayo Johnson, a Nigerian graduate of Tai Solarin University living in the UK, challenged a British man, Angantýr, to a publicly monitored English language competition after a disparaging comment about Nigerians’ English skills.

The competition, held on May 18, included writing, listening, speaking, and reading tests; Angantýr scored 83 points, narrowly defeating Ifedayo who scored 79.

Angantýr proclaimed his victory as defending England’s honour, while Ifedayo questioned the shamefulness of the outcome but it remains unclear if he will leave the UK as pledged.

The contest drew various public reactions highlighting the close margin and the significance of English proficiency in immigration and societal perceptions.
