Nigeria Launches MediPool to Slash Drug Prices and Boost Local Pharmaceutical Production
The Nigerian Federal Government has launched MediPool, a pharmaceutical Group Purchasing Organisation aimed at lowering drug costs through bulk purchasing and boosting local drug manufacturing.
Announced by Health Minister Prof. Muhammad Pate, MediPool will consolidate public healthcare procurement under a Public-Private Partnership model to negotiate better prices and improve supply chains, initially benefiting over 37 million Nigerians.
The initiative supports President Tinubu’s policy to enhance self-reliance by producing 70% of pharmaceuticals locally and expanding the pharmaceutical workforce, backed by investments from the European Investment Bank and Afreximbank.
Key local manufacturing projects include Codex Bio Limited’s diagnostic test kit facility and Jawa Investments’ antibiotic production, marking strides toward medicine security and affordability across Nigeria.
