Nigeria launches first indigenous onshore crude export terminal, aiming to boost oil production targets
Green Energy International Limited (GEIL) has commenced export operations at Nigeria’s first indigenous onshore crude oil terminal located at Otakikpo in Rivers State, with the first shipment occurring on June 8, 2025.
The $1.3 billion expandable facility, featuring an initial storage capacity of 750,000 barrels, aims to support over 40 nearby stranded oil fields and boost Nigeria’s crude production, helping to meet the country’s energy goals.
This development is expected to reduce extraction costs and reliance on offshore terminals, which could increase investment and production in Nigeria’s oil sector amid current infrastructure challenges.
Meanwhile, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has increased imports of crude oil from the United States to meet its rising processing demands, sourcing about one-third of its crude from the USA since 2025.
