Lassa Fever Spreads to 18 Nigerian States with 142 Deaths, NCDC Urges Vigilance
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported 747 confirmed Lassa fever cases across 18 states with 142 deaths as of epidemiological week 22, 2025, reflecting a 19% case fatality rate.
New infections increased in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, and Nasarawa states, with five states accounting for 91% of cases, particularly Ondo (31%) and Bauchi (25%).
Although cases have declined compared to 2024, NCDC stresses ongoing vigilance, public awareness, and community engagement to control the outbreak.
Response efforts include Infection Prevention and Control e-learning, deployment of Rapid Response Teams, distribution of medical supplies, and collaboration with health centers to reduce hospital infections.
