Investigation launched into Durban medical intern’s death
Medical Ombudsman Professor Taole Mokoena has initiated an investigation into the death of Dr. Alulutho Mazwi, a 25-year-old medical intern who collapsed at Durban’s Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital last week after allegedly being denied sick leave.
The investigation, requested by Health Minister Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, will explore not only the circumstances of Dr. Mazwi’s death but also the working conditions of medical interns to identify potential systemic issues.
The case has sparked concern among various trade unions and associations regarding the poor working conditions faced by medical interns.
