Igbo Women Assembly Urges Ex-Head of State Gowon to Address 1966 Coup to Correct Injustice
Nneka Chimezie, National President of the Igbo Women Assembly, has urged former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon to address the 1966 Coup, aligning with General Ibrahim Babangida’s recent statement that the coup was not an Igbo plot.
Chimezie defended the May 30 Biafra Heroes Day sit-at-home as a legitimate commemoration of those who died during the civil war and linked ongoing injustices against the Igbo to renewed separatist agitations.
The IWA called for peaceful federal dialogue with agitators, unconditional release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to promote peace, and urged Igbo unity while cautioning political leaders against personal interests undermining the race.
