GitHub has launched the GitHub Copilot Coding Agent, an AI-powered software engineering assistant that autonomously handles routine coding tasks by working on GitHub issues, starting rollout for Copilot Enterprise and Pro+ users.

The agent operates in the cloud using GitHub Actions to create development environments and can only push changes to branches it creates, requiring human approval to proceed with CI/CD workflows and pull request merges.

Powered by Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 3.7, the agent excels at managing low-to-medium complexity tasks like bug fixes, feature additions, and refactoring, integrating closely with existing GitHub workflows and developer tools such as VS Code, JetBrains, Eclipse, and Xcode.

Additionally, Microsoft unveiled a related sight reliability engineering (SRE) agent for Azure that autonomously monitors and remediates system issues, orchestrating work through GitHub and partnerships with services like New Relic and PagerDuty to enhance DevOps automation and efficiency.
