Falana Warns Wike Sealing Embassies Over Ground Rent Could Spark Diplomatic Crisis
Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, warned FCT Minister Nyesom Wike against sealing embassies over unpaid ground rents, citing constitutional and international protections under the Vienna Convention.
Falana emphasized that embassy premises are inviolable and such actions could trigger serious diplomatic problems for Nigeria.
The FCT Administration had named 9,000 property owners, including 34 embassies, as rent defaulters and threatened to reclaim lands, with enforcement expected after a grace period expired on June 6, 2025.
Falana urged that any enforcement must adhere to legal due process, involving courts and tribunals, reinforcing the right to fair hearing guaranteed by Nigerian law and international human rights frameworks.
