Electricity reforms ‘brought to life’ in updated electricity wheeling rules
- The Department of Electricity and Energy in South Africa has released updated Regulatory Rules on Network Charges for Third-Party Transportation of Energy, known as the electricity wheeling framework.
- Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa described the framework as a significant reform aiming to diversify energy sources, reduce reliance on Eskom, and support energy security and affordability.
- Key principles include open access, non-discriminatory grid access, cost-reflective tariffs, transparency, and promoting renewable energy through fair competition.
- This initiative aligns with the Energy Action Plan announced in July 2022, which focuses on fixing Eskom, enabling private investments, accelerating renewables, and transforming the electricity sector.
