Eid al-Kabir in Ibadan marred by soaring ram and pepper prices amid economic strains
As Eid al-Kabir approaches in Ibadan, soaring prices of rams and other sacrificial animals have left many Muslims skeptical about celebrating this year. Rams are priced between ₦200,000 to ₦1.3 million, a steep increase influenced by rising transportation and feeding costs from northern Nigeria. Additionally, the prices of essential ingredients like pepper and tomatoes have sharply risen due to factors including bridge collapse at Mokwa, affecting supply routes.
Many residents are adjusting their purchases, opting for goats instead of rams to cope with the financial strain. Market sellers and buyers alike express concern over the high costs, urging governments to support local agriculture to stabilize prices in the future.
