Egypt, South Africa lead Africa’s smartphone growth as Nigeria slumps in Q1 2025
Africa’s smartphone market grew by 6% year-on-year in Q1 2025, with 19.4 million units shipped, marking the continent’s eighth consecutive quarter of growth, according to Canalys data.
Egypt and South Africa led the growth with 34% and 14% increases respectively, driven by government policies, network expansion, and improved consumer confidence, while Nigeria saw a 7% decline due to economic pressures.
TRANSSION remained the dominant vendor with 47% market share, though its shipments declined, as competitors like Samsung, Xiaomi, and HONOR gained ground, with HONOR experiencing a 283% surge.
Kenya and Algeria showed steady resilience with modest growth supported by financing options and telecom investments amid broader global trade and economic challenges affecting Africa’s markets.
