Ed Sheeran Tells U.S. Supreme Court to Reject ‘Let’s Get It On’ Copyright Case Over ‘Thinking Out Loud’
Ed Sheeran has urged the U.S. Supreme Court to reject an appeal that seeks to revive a copyright infringement lawsuit claiming his song “Thinking Out Loud” copied Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.”
The lawsuit, initiated by Structured Asset Sales (SAS), was previously dismissed by the Second Circuit appeals court, which ruled the songs only share basic musical elements not protected by copyright.
Sheeran’s legal team argues the case lacks precedent-setting importance and that the accusers’ claims are based on false premises, warning that hearing the case could disrupt settled copyright law.
The case highlights ongoing debates over the scope of copyright protection in music, particularly regarding fundamental musical components and their use in popular songs.
