Doctors will continue to ‘Japa’ unless salary improves – FMC MD
Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, outgoing Medical Director of the Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Abeokuta, warns that Nigerian doctors will continue to migrate abroad unless the government improves salaries and offers incentives.
He acknowledged government efforts to expand medical student admissions and build healthcare infrastructure but emphasized better pay is essential to retain medical talent amid the “japa” syndrome.
Musa-Olomu praised President Bola Tinubu’s investments in healthcare, including securing budget allocations for tertiary health institutions, and highlighted FMC’s upgrades to world-class standards and its leading role in performing over 40% of Nigeria’s open heart surgeries.
