Billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has criticized Nigeria’s health spending as inadequate to address major healthcare challenges such as high maternal mortality, child deaths, and disease outbreaks.

During a roundtable in Lagos, Gates highlighted that Nigeria’s health budget is very small both in relative and absolute terms compared to the scale of its health crises.

He noted Nigeria’s struggles with one of the highest maternal mortality rates globally, widespread child malnutrition, and poor access to primary healthcare services.

Gates recently received the national honor of Commander of the Federal Republic from President Bola Tinubu.
