$220m fine: Meta threatens to shut down Instagram, Facebook in Nigeria
- Meta Platforms faces mounting regulatory pressure in Nigeria after a $220 million fine for alleged data privacy violations.
- The fine was imposed following a 38-month investigation by Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
- Meta warned it might shut down Facebook and Instagram services in Nigeria due to what it calls “unrealistic” government demands, including requirements for prior approval on data transfers and educational content on data privacy.
- The company disputes the Nigerian authorities’ interpretation of data protection laws and plans to appeal the fines, with the court setting a compliance deadline at the end of June.
