Elon Musk announced his intention to bring Tesla’s robotaxi service to Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the potential for autonomous vehicles as part of the Kingdom’s modernization ambitions.
Uber is also planning to launch its own robotaxi service in Saudi Arabia later this year through a partnership with China’s Pony.AI, supported by a memorandum of understanding with Saudi’s Transport General Authority.
Saudi Arabia aims to integrate autonomous vehicles into its Vision 2030 plan to diversify its economy from oil dependency, having established regulatory frameworks for self-driving cars.
Tesla has yet to publicly launch its robotaxi service, with a pilot expected in Austin in June, while Uber’s Careem dominates the Middle Eastern rideshare market, including 26 Saudi cities.
