Strike Threat Looms As ASUU Decries Gov’t Inaction On Agreements
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of a possible nationwide strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to implement agreements signed since 2013 concerning funding and staff welfare in Nigerian universities.
ASUU’s President, Professor Chris Piwuna, criticized the government’s neglect, demanding the release of withheld salaries, payment to affected lecturers, and the proper use of university funds.
The union highlighted unresolved issues including the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, promotion arrears, and threats to university autonomy, urging urgent government action to avoid further disruptions.
ASUU remains open to dialogue but emphasized it will take industrial action if demands remain unmet, underscoring the need to revitalize universities for national development.
