Due to high petrol prices, more Nigerians are turning to compressed natural gas (CNG) priced at N200 per standard cubic metre, causing long queues at limited filling stations.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria criticized the slow expansion of CNG infrastructure and called the situation a “national embarrassment” given the rising demand.

Nigeria has increased its CNG stations from 11 to 65 with plans for further expansion involving partnerships with NNPC and other organizations to meet demand and encourage cleaner, affordable fuel use.

Challenges remain including high vehicle conversion costs and inadequate service capacity, with officials urging faster implementation of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative.
