Nigeria records 261,483 human rights complaints in April

Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) reported a significant increase in human rights complaints, totaling 261,483 in April 2025.
The most prevalent violations were killings and kidnappings, especially in the Plateau, Benue, and Borno states.
NHRC highlighted a 20% month-on-month rise in complaints, with 35% occurring in the Middle Belt region, and urged government authorities to investigate and prosecute offenders.
The commission emphasized the need for independent investigations, victim support, accountability, and sustained peacebuilding efforts amid ongoing regional conflicts.
