The federal government of Nigeria has been urged to adopt evidence-based tobacco harm reduction (THR) strategies, including the regulation of vaping products, to address high smoking rates in the country.

Experts highlight that vaping and other safer nicotine alternatives are significantly less harmful than traditional cigarettes, with studies showing vaping is at least 95% less harmful.

Nigeria currently lacks comprehensive policies on vaping, which may be limiting smokers’ access to quitting support and safer alternatives.

Advocates reference successes in countries like Sweden and the UK, urging Nigeria to implement a three-pronged THR strategy to reduce tobacco-related harm effectively.
